HURIWA defends John Cardinal Onaiyekan against criticisns from Tinubu’s aides*

Cardinal John Onyaiyekan

By George Mgbeleke
Prominent pro-democracy and civil rights advocacy organisation, HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) has carpeted two presidential aides Mr. Daniel Bwala and Temitope Ajayi for criticising the Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja John Cardinal Onyaiyekan for granting a television interview to analyse the recent visit to president Bola Ahmed Tinubu by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) to president Tinubu at the presodential villa Abuja.

Whilst Mr. Bwala one of the many Special Advisers on communications to the prrsident said Cardinal Onaiyekan spoke for only catholics on his impressions from the Bishops’ recent visit to the president, his counterpart Mr. Temitope Ajayi the Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity to the president accused the respected Christian leader, John Cardinal Onaiyekan of abusing what he calls the clerical privilege of attending the meeting with ths Nigerian leader.

Temitope Ajayi had argued that the Catholic Bishops discharged what they considered their moral obligation by presenting their concerns to the President. President Tinubu, for his part, accorded them respect by granting them an audience and responding to every issue they raised. That exchange reflected the civility expected in a constitutional democracy.

He continued his criticism of the Cleric by asserting that reciprocity should have dictated that the confidentiality and dignity of that engagement be preserved.

Mr. Ajayi insisted that as such, it was inappropriate for one of the participants to appear on national television almost immediately to offer his own version of what was essentially a private conversation with the President. Clerical office carries privileges, but it also imposes obligations. Among the qualities the Scriptures require of bishops are temperance, maturity, self-restraint, and the wisdom to remain above needless public controversy. Those virtues become even more important when dealing with matters of state. Public influence should be exercised with discretion, not by converting privileged access into a platform for post-meeting commentary.

HURIWA through the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko accused the duo of being disrespectful to an elderly statesman and a respected clergy who is widely reputed to be one of the choicest patriots and nationalists in the person of John Cardinal Onaiyekan, just as HURIWA said the interview granted by the senior clergy is for the best public interest and that the emeritus Archbishop of Abuja definitely spoke for the over 130 million households afflicted by multidemensional poverty and for the over 60% absolutely poor Nigerians as ascribed by the Worpd Bank who cut across ethnicities and religious affiliations, therefore the unfortunate and irrational rants by the two presidential aides are inconsequential and unreasonable.

Besides, HURIWA said the statements by the aides of president Tinubu make them look amateuristic, inexperienced and lacking knowledge of the political history of Nigeria because if these two young men know about the political history of Nigeria, they would have known that John Cardinal Onaiyekan has been visiting Presidents for decades long before these two rookies entered the primary schools and indeed the respected Christian leader Cardinal Onaiyekan has remained consisted in speaking raw truth to power and has never been known for double speak unlike for instance, Mr. Bwala, who was once against President Tinubu but when President Tinubu dangled a juicy post as one of his several special communication advisers, Bwala collapsed on his ‘conscience’ and swallowed his vomits to serve the same Tinubu he had called all sorts of unprintable names.

HURIWA faulted the comment by Temitope Ajayi that the interview granted to the popular Arise Television station amounted to a breach of privilege even as the Rights group stated that the meeting of the predident and the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria were extensively televised and covered by the media just as the positions of both the Bishops and the president were the focus of news reports thereafter for which prominent Nigerians including the former Vice president Atiku Abubakar and the frontline opposition presidential flagbearer for the 2027 presidential poll Mr. Peter Obi also convassed their positions as opposed to that of the president.

“How did the Archnishop Emeritus abused any privilege? Was the meeting secret conversations or were the participants plotting any partisan objective that does not concern the public interest? Is president Tinibu not the president of all Nigerians and are the clerics who attended the meeting in their position as Catholic Bishops of Nigeria not the spiritual leaders of millions of Nigerians? So what was secret that John Cardinal Onaiyekan divulged or were the participants administered with oaths of secrecy and confidentiality? As far as we are concerned, John Cardinal Onaiyekan deserves to be praised for speaking truth to power and for contributing significantly to alert both the politicians and the electoral governing body INEC of their legal, moral and absolute obligations to conduct free, fair, peaceful and trajsparent general election in January 2027. Or is the president hiding anything from Nigerians on why he is afraid of a free and fair election?

Diri Laments Oil Production Effects, Inaugurates 18-Member C’ttee For Cancer Treatment Centre

Bayelsa State Deputy, Gov.Dr. Peter Akpe(middle) flanked by committee members

By David Wei,Bayelsa

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has described as unfair and unacceptable the situation whereby communities in the state which bear the cost of the nation’s wealth are left without the care they need to remain healthy and productive.

Governor Diri stated this at the weekend while inaugurating an 18-member steering committee for the establishment of the Bayelsa Cancer Treatment and Research Centre at Government House, Yenagoa.

Represented by his Deputy, Dr. Peter Akpe, the Bayelsa helmsman noted that cancer “is no longer a distant disease in communities around the state, due to decades of oil pollution with serious long-term health consequences on the people.”

According to him, breast, cervical and prostate cancers have become quite rampant among the populace, resulting in deaths even among young people in their most productive years, thus necessitating the establishment of the centre.

His words: “Let me begin with the plain truth: Cancer is no longer a distant disease in our communities. Almost every family in this hall has a story: a mother diagnosed too late; a brother who traveled to Lagos, Abuja or abroad and spent everything they owned on treatment.

“Breast, cervical and prostate cancers in particular are taking our people in their most productive years. Too many of these deaths are not because the disease cannot be treated, but because treatment was too far away, too expensive, or came too late.

“In Bayelsa, we carry an additional burden. Decades of oil pollution have left their mark on our land, our water, and we fear, on the health of our people. The Bayelsa State Oil and Environmental Commission Report of 2023 raised serious concerns about the long-term health consequences of that exposure.

“We will not accept a situation where our communities bear the cost of the nation’s wealth and are then left without the care they need. Therefore, a cancer treatment centre in Bayelsa State is not a luxury; it is a matter of health justice.”

Highlighting the terms of reference for the committee, Governor Diri charged the chairman and members to make an empirical assessment of the cancer burden in the state, as well as recommend the most suitable location for the centre, equipment, infrastructure, partnerships and financing options, amongst others.

He also charged them to plan for the requisite and competent manpower, maintenance, training, accessibility to the facility and steady supply of drugs and consumables, noting that they were chosen on account of their competence and years of experience.

In his acceptance speech on behalf of the steering committee, the Chairman and Commissioner for Health, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, expressed gratitude to the governor for finding them worthy to work for the establishment of a world-class cancer centre in Bayelsa.

Prof. Brisibe, noted that setting up of the committee underscores the unwavering commitment and seriousness the Douye Diri Administration attaches to the health and well-being of the people of the state.

He said the burden of cancer in the state is a reality with huge economic and health burden on families and could no longer be managed with half measures, which informed the careful selection of members with the required expertise.

According to him: “First of all, let me appreciate, with deepest gratitude, on behalf of the members of this steering committee, His Excellency the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, for his unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of all Bayelsans.

“It is visionary leadership and decisive mandate that have brought us to this inauguration today. The burden of cancer on communities is a reality that we can no longer afford to manage with half measures.

“Families in Bayelsa endure the excruciating financial, physical and emotional toll of travelling outside the state and often outside the country, just to access basic diagnostic and therapeutic cancer care. This will end with the mandate for the work we are about to begin.”

Members of the steering committee include Dr. Jones Stow, Prof. Jumbo Johnbull, Dr. Boboye Ifie, Dr. Oluwadare Marcus and Dr. James Omietimi.

Others are Dr. Ebikapaye Okoyen, Dr. Ngowari Torunana, Mrs. Beatrice Olomiete, Hon. Kingsley Kuku, Dr. Ibimonye Porbeni and Mr. Nimifagha Esindu.

Also to serve on the committee are Prof. Kelvin Kiridi, Dr. Timipa Peregha-West, Magdalene Alabinte, Prof. Beleudanyo Fente, Dr. Elizabeth Obiorah and Dr. Embeleakpo Apere.
