Fubara Advocates Shift to Vocational Technical Education,DeliversThree LegacyPromects At Elechi Amadi Polytechnic

L-R: Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr Dagogo Wokoma; Deputy Governor, Prof Ngozi Odu, Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, Chairman, Obio/Akpor LGA, Dr Gift Worlu and former Deputy Governor, Engr Tele Ikuru, during the commissioning of projects at Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Rumuola, on Wednesday.

By George Mgbeleke

Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has advocated a strategic shift to Vocational and Technical Education (VTE)in Nigeria’s educational curriculum, insisting that the current emphasis on paper qualifications over technical expertise and practical skills were the major drivers of unemployment and economic stagnation in the country.

Governor Fubara made the advocacy on Wednesday during the commissioning of three major infrastructure projects at the Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Rumuola, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The Governor said that if Rivers State and by extension, Nigeria must prepare her youths for the challenges of the 21st Century, deliberate and consistent efforts must be made to realign the curriculum with vocational and technical education focused on practical skills for self employment and job creation.

Governor Fubara recalled that the 6-3-3-4 Educational System which Nigeria adopted in the 1980s was designed to prepare young Nigerians for the future through Vocational and Technical Education at the secondary school level. He said that under the programme, students were expected to advance their educational pursuits to either the Polytechnics or Universities depending on their capacities, talents and skills at a young age. According to him, at the completion of the first three three years of secondary school, a student should have acquired a skill, trade or craft and could become self employed.
He lamented that over the years, the country appears to have deviated from that noble vision and young people have become so obsessed with acquiring certificates and degrees without skills and competencies relevant to the present day labour market.
“The Polytechnic system was designed in such a way that if you’re gifted with your hands; if you’re a technical person, you can go there and learn more, build you skills so that you can add value to our society. But you know that somehow, our society don’t attach much importance to those level of people. So even when you know that you can’t survive the rigours of academic works, you put your head, struggle to make sure you complete the six years, jump into one university, and come out with one degree that is not useful. That is part of the problem we are having in our society,” he said.
The Governor explained that the idea behind the
Entrepreneurship Center project at Elechi Amadi Polytechnic is to have a place where young people can be groomed with relevant skills that could lead them to become employers of labour, on graduation, instead of job seekers.
Governor Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s focus on developmental projects that will create opportunities and solve problems of the society.
“So for us as a government, what is important to us is not just about embarking on projects but executing projects that will touch the lives of the people; projects that will solve problems and projects that will bring advancement to our lives.
“Today, technology has taken over everything. So if we have to prepare our youths; if we have to prepare our dear state, for the challenge ahead, our educational programmes have to be very strategic,” he said.
Governor Fubara charged the school authorities, students and the entire community to safeguard the facilities and equipment against theft and vandalism, adding that they should take ownership of the infrastructure instead of treating them as “government property.”
He emphasised the need for the people of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area to embrace the new wave of peace in the state, stressing that political stability remained a primary condition for development.
The Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peter Nwagor, who gave a brief presentation on the projects, said one aspect entailed the construction and complete furnishing of two units of one-story buildings housing classrooms, workshops, staff quarters, and administrative wings for the School of Engineering and the Entrepreneurship Center.
Each building spans approximately 1,940 square meters, featuring eight halls, 14 staff offices, 22 toilet facilities, and fully air-conditioned spaces equipped for practical training.
The third project, the Governing Council Building was started by the Nyesom Wike administration but completed and fully furnished by the Fubara-led administration.
The Rector of Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Dr. Moses Neebee, hailed the legacy projects describing them as historic landmarks on the school’s landscape. According to Neebee, the Entrepreneurship Centre and other projects were some of the major developments on the campus in nearly two decades.

Diri Laments Oil Production Effects, Inaugurates 18-Member C’ttee For Cancer Treatment Centre

Bayelsa State Deputy, Gov.Dr. Peter Akpe(middle) flanked by committee members

By David Wei,Bayelsa

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has described as unfair and unacceptable the situation whereby communities in the state which bear the cost of the nation’s wealth are left without the care they need to remain healthy and productive.

Governor Diri stated this at the weekend while inaugurating an 18-member steering committee for the establishment of the Bayelsa Cancer Treatment and Research Centre at Government House, Yenagoa.

Represented by his Deputy, Dr. Peter Akpe, the Bayelsa helmsman noted that cancer “is no longer a distant disease in communities around the state, due to decades of oil pollution with serious long-term health consequences on the people.”

According to him, breast, cervical and prostate cancers have become quite rampant among the populace, resulting in deaths even among young people in their most productive years, thus necessitating the establishment of the centre.

His words: “Let me begin with the plain truth: Cancer is no longer a distant disease in our communities. Almost every family in this hall has a story: a mother diagnosed too late; a brother who traveled to Lagos, Abuja or abroad and spent everything they owned on treatment.

“Breast, cervical and prostate cancers in particular are taking our people in their most productive years. Too many of these deaths are not because the disease cannot be treated, but because treatment was too far away, too expensive, or came too late.

“In Bayelsa, we carry an additional burden. Decades of oil pollution have left their mark on our land, our water, and we fear, on the health of our people. The Bayelsa State Oil and Environmental Commission Report of 2023 raised serious concerns about the long-term health consequences of that exposure.

“We will not accept a situation where our communities bear the cost of the nation’s wealth and are then left without the care they need. Therefore, a cancer treatment centre in Bayelsa State is not a luxury; it is a matter of health justice.”

Highlighting the terms of reference for the committee, Governor Diri charged the chairman and members to make an empirical assessment of the cancer burden in the state, as well as recommend the most suitable location for the centre, equipment, infrastructure, partnerships and financing options, amongst others.

He also charged them to plan for the requisite and competent manpower, maintenance, training, accessibility to the facility and steady supply of drugs and consumables, noting that they were chosen on account of their competence and years of experience.

In his acceptance speech on behalf of the steering committee, the Chairman and Commissioner for Health, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, expressed gratitude to the governor for finding them worthy to work for the establishment of a world-class cancer centre in Bayelsa.

Prof. Brisibe, noted that setting up of the committee underscores the unwavering commitment and seriousness the Douye Diri Administration attaches to the health and well-being of the people of the state.

He said the burden of cancer in the state is a reality with huge economic and health burden on families and could no longer be managed with half measures, which informed the careful selection of members with the required expertise.

According to him: “First of all, let me appreciate, with deepest gratitude, on behalf of the members of this steering committee, His Excellency the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, for his unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of all Bayelsans.

“It is visionary leadership and decisive mandate that have brought us to this inauguration today. The burden of cancer on communities is a reality that we can no longer afford to manage with half measures.

“Families in Bayelsa endure the excruciating financial, physical and emotional toll of travelling outside the state and often outside the country, just to access basic diagnostic and therapeutic cancer care. This will end with the mandate for the work we are about to begin.”

Members of the steering committee include Dr. Jones Stow, Prof. Jumbo Johnbull, Dr. Boboye Ifie, Dr. Oluwadare Marcus and Dr. James Omietimi.

Others are Dr. Ebikapaye Okoyen, Dr. Ngowari Torunana, Mrs. Beatrice Olomiete, Hon. Kingsley Kuku, Dr. Ibimonye Porbeni and Mr. Nimifagha Esindu.

Also to serve on the committee are Prof. Kelvin Kiridi, Dr. Timipa Peregha-West, Magdalene Alabinte, Prof. Beleudanyo Fente, Dr. Elizabeth Obiorah and Dr. Embeleakpo Apere.
