Analysis: 2026 Hajj fare should be N6.8 million
By Ibrahim Muhammad
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) on Saturday announced the final fare for Hajj 2026 for Nigerian intending pilgrims.
The commission said the fares, which show that Pilgrims from the Southern part of the country will pay N8,561,013.67, while their counterparts from the north are to pay N8,244,813.67, while those from the north-eastern axis, comprising Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States, are to pay N8,118,333.67 for 2026 Hajj services.
NAHCON also said the fares were arrived at after consultation with the Forum of State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards.
The differentials, as usual, are derived from the cost of air tickets to and from Saudi Arabia.
Last year, pilgrims from the Northern part of the country paid N8, 457,685.59, while those from the South paid N8, 784, 085.59. Pilgrims from the Borno axis paid N8,327,125.59.
There is therefore, a reduction of about N218,000 to N220,000 from what was paid in 2025 compared to the 2026 Hajj fare.
A commendable feat by the Commission.
I applaud NAHCON for announcing the 2026 Hajj fare early to pave the way for proper planning, which also creates certainty in the payment of the Hajj fare by intending pilgrims.
But has NAHCON concluded the cost of pilgrims’ accommodation in Makkah and Madinah? Has there been a fixed amount for catering services in Makkah and Madinah? Have airlines agreed to stick with last year’s cost of an air ticket, or is there any agreed adjustment in costs?
However, the 2026 Hajj fare has an increase of about N3.6million compared to the 2024 Hajj fare. Talks of assets and liabilities.
The 2026 Hajj fare has added assets compared to the 2025 Hajj cost, while the 2026 Hajj fare is a product of liabilities compared to the 2024 Hajj fare. One year apart. A liability of course.
During the 2024 Hajj, Pilgrims from Nigeria’s Southern part paid N4,899,000 as Hajj fare; those from the Northern part paid N4,699,000, while Yola and Maiduguri paid N4,679,000 for the 2024 Hajj.
The above excludes the 90 billion subsidy provided by the federal government, in which each pilgrim was said to have benefited with about N1 million.
There are 25 Hajj services provided in the templates used in the 2025 Hajj cost indices. 11 Services were tabulated on the value of N1,600,00 to $1 US dollars, though the forex stood at N1,520 to 1$ when the 2025 Hajj services were paid for. An unfinished transaction.
Now, what is the exchange rate used to tabulate the 2026 Hajj fare, and how much is the BTA for 2026 Hajj pilgrims?
The 2025 Hajj pilgrims were paid $500, with each pilgrim paying N800,000 for the BTA. What is the BTA equivalent in dollars and naira?
As of today, forex stood at N1,492 to $1. This means that the dollar rate for the 2026 Hajj is lower than the 2025 Hajj.
The total US dollar component in the 2025 Hajj fare is $4,622. The dollar component should be N6,872,266.92 if the same amount is converted based on the current exchange rate of N1,492 to the USD.
The local components of the 2025 Hajj fare is N36,000, which includes NAHCON’s administrative charges, Development levy, uniforms, Yellow card, States’ admin charges, and Registration forms.
If all domestic services remain the same and there are no increases in the dollar-based services in Saudi Arabia, the 2026 Hajj fare should be N6,857,398.32 plus the N36,000 local components, which is N6,893,398.
Unless the system adopts another anticipatory higher exchange rate, as happened last year.
The projection is based on my experience that all hajj services have been captured under the hajj fare template, and even the BTA is announced along with its naira equivalent – at least that is what is obtained when Uba Mana served as Head of Media in NAHCON.
My analysis may not be accurate, but I want to be proved wrong.

Hajj: IHR commends NAHCON on timely airlift, urges improved pilgrims’ services
By Abdul-Ganiyy Akanbi
The 2026 Hajj Media Monitoring Team of the Independent Hajj Reporters, IHR, has commended the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, for completing the outbound airlift of Nigerian intending pilgrims within the scheduled timeline.
In its Second Assessment Report released on Sunday in Makkah, the team described the feat as an operational milestone that largely aligned with projections.
The report, signed by the chairman of the committee, Malam Nasiru Lawal, noted that despite a few observations and logistical challenges, the exercise was largely successful.
IHR welcomed the establishment of additional embarkation points in Zamfara and Ogun States as a positive development for intending pilgrims, saying pilgrims from the two states no longer need to undertake stressful interstate journeys before departure to Saudi Arabia.
According to the report, the initiative has significantly reduced travel stress and improved safety for pilgrims, but however, noted that the new centres have placed additional logistical burdens on Hajj air carriers and overstretched NAHCON’s human resource capacity.
It said more zonal officials are now required at the various airports, while airlines need additional ground operational personnel, warning that the situation may increase operational costs in subsequent Hajj exercises if not properly managed.
Presenting its offshore assessment, IHR gave a relatively positive review of the welfare of Nigerian pilgrims in Madinah where it particularly praised the standard of accommodation and the proximity of hotels to Masjid Al-Nabawi.
“We commend NAHCON for retaining the Markaziya locations for Nigerian pilgrims in Madinah, which continues to enhance pilgrims’ comfort and ease of access to the Prophet’s Mosque,” the report stated.
The team, however, advised NAHCON and State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards to improve the turnaround time for allocating accommodation to arriving pilgrims in Madinah.
This, it said, will reduce waiting periods after arrival.
On feeding, IHR observed that arrangements have improved considerably compared to previous years, but called for greater variety and better menu selection.
The committee also described the launch of the interactive Hajj Companion App by NAHCON as a major step toward digitalising Hajj operations, noting that the app can improve pilgrims’ movement coordination and orientation services.
IHR added that the application has the potential to evolve into Nigeria’s own version of the Nusuk platform, covering all aspects of Hajj administration and pilgrims’ services.
To achieve that, the team recommended that NAHCON partner with State Pilgrims Welfare Boards and Private Tour Operators in developing and integrating the app.
The collaboration, it said, would make the platform more comprehensive and inclusive of all stakeholders’ activities.
As the Masha’ir rites begin, IHR urged all operational stakeholders to work collaboratively to ensure Nigerian pilgrims perform Hajj under comfortable and conducive conditions.
The committee also cautioned stakeholders against politicising Hajj services and urged focus on efficient service delivery to the guests of Allah.

Hajj: NAHCON urges stakeholders’ collaboration over Mina, Arafat accommodation concerns
By Abdul-Ganiyy Akanbi
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, has called for constructive engagement among stakeholders over concerns raised by a State Pilgrims’ Welfare Board on accommodation arrangements in Mina and Arafat for the 2026 Hajj.
In a statement issued by the NAHCON’s management, the commission acknowledged that challenges can arise during preparations for an operation as large and complex as Hajj.
The commission said continuous consultation remains the most effective way of resolving issues that affect pilgrims’ welfare and operations.
NAHCON explained that the selection and allocation of Mashair service providers for the 2026 Hajj were largely based on preferences and choices made by participating states during consultations with the Commission.
According to the statement, the commission respected the collective decisions reached by states in the interest of pilgrims’ welfare and operational harmony.
The commission, therefore, advised State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards and officials to prioritise direct engagement with service providers, saying solution-driven discussions should come first, rather than taking unresolved concerns to the media prematurely.
NAHCON further encouraged states to work closely with service providers on-site, explaining that this would help identify gaps, improve arrangements where necessary, and ensure the comfort, safety, and welfare of Nigerian pilgrims.
The Mashair areas, Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah, are central to the Hajj rites and require coordinated logistics for accommodation, feeding, transportation, and medical support.
The commission noted that concerns raised by any state could be addressed more effectively through established channels of communication with service providers and NAHCON officials.
It reassured intending pilgrims of its commitment to monitoring service delivery in the Mashair during the 2026 Hajj exercise.
NAHCON said it would continue to engage all relevant stakeholders to ensure a successful and hitch-free operation, urging all State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards to maintain open lines of communication and avoid actions that could create unnecessary tension ahead of the pilgrimage.
With preparations for the 2026 Hajj already underway, the commission assured it would remain focused on delivering improved services for Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia.
