Jonathan Flags Off New Bayelsa Stadium Project *Diri Seeks NDDC, Private Sector Support *FG, NFF Hail Bayelsa Gov

By David Owei, Bayelsa
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday, turned the sod of the new Olympic-standard 25,000-capacity Bayelsa stadium project at Igbogene, Yenagoa.
The former Nigerian leader performed the groundbreaking ceremony on a day the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, restated his appeal to the federal government, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), oil firms operating in the state and the private sector to join hands with his administration to develop sporting talents.
The Federal Government through the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) equally thumped up Governor Diri for initiating the project.
Dr. Jonathan expressed delight over the project, saying as a Bayelsan, he was duty bound to celebrate with the state government for the progress so far achieved.
He lauded Diri’s developmental strides, urging him not to rest on his laurels and that the contractor and the state government should ensure the project met the highest standards.
Jonathan also called on the state and federal governments to set up a sports fund to cater for sportsmen after their active days and encourage younger ones to be involved in sports.
He said: “This is my state and I have to celebrate with the government for the progress so far made. This is an iconic project that will develop the state. Please do not rest on your laurels as we want this stadium to meet the best standards.
“I am happy with the presence of relevant federal government officials. I hope they will guide the state well and support where necessary.
“As a country, we must have a fund to care for sportsmen. The federal and state government can think about it so that the younger generation will be interested in sports.
“I am happy that you gave a target of 24 months and I hope that by that time I will escort President Tinubu to Bayelsa to inaugurate it.”
In his remarks, Governor Douye Diri said the groundbreaking ceremony embodied a transformative advancement for the state with the potential to reshape the identity and aspirations of Bayelsa in the realm of sports and beyond.
He said the project was in line with the Assured Prosperity mantra of his administration, which prioritises urbanisation, sports, and youth development as the cornerstones of development.
Diri noted that boyind the value the project would add to the sports sector, the stadium will also generate economic opportunities, provide jobs and stimulate local businesses.
The state’s helmsman said while the government recognised the cost implication of the project, it was determined to make it a reality and urged young people in the state to seize the opportunity and strive for excellence, aiming for new heights.
He called on oil multinationals operating in the state as well as other government and private agencies to support the project in line with global practice where big business brands support sports.
He said: “This facility will serve as an inspiration for our youth – a place where dreams can take flight, talent can be cultivated, and champions can arise.
“The construction of this ultra-modern stadium aligns seamlessly with our broader agenda, not just for sports, but for the comprehensive development of our urban landscape.
“Globally, the practice of major brands sponsoring sports and stadiums has become a widespread phenomenon since the late 1990s. Notable examples include Emirates’ sponsorship of Arsenal Football Club’s stadium, Etihad Airways’ partnership with Manchester City Football Club, and Vodafone’s sponsorship of the McLaren Formula 1 team. Similarly, in the United States, companies like AT&T, Verizon, and Bank of America have sponsored various sports stadiums and events.
“Our situation should not be different. I strongly urge our federal intervention agencies such as the NDDC and multinational companies, particularly those in the banking, telecommunications, and oil sectors, to emulate this trend and explore opportunities for sponsoring sports and this project. Stand with our youth. In doing so, they will promote their brands while contributing to the development of our sports infrastructure. This will ensure that the Assured Prosperity of Bayelsa State remains on track.”
In a goodwill message, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Alhaji Shehu Dikko, said the Federal Government endorsed the project, saying it is in line with the ideals of the government at the centre.
He remrked that it is visionary and bold to embark on the project, which he said had the capacity to impact on the economy of the state and pledged the support of the Commission to make the project a reality.
Also, the NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, and his predecessor, Amaju Pinnick, both described Diri as a man of his words and pledged support for the project, which they say will benefit not only Bayelsa but Nigeria at large.
In a welcome address, the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports, Dr. Daniel Igali, said the stadium had the capacity to make the state a dominant force in sports, saying for almost three decades, the Samson Siasia Sports Complex had served the state but that it was no longer adequate.
He said sportsmen and women have been making the state proud, stressing that when completed the stadium would create more sports champions and drive economic activities.

Bayelsa United confirms Coach Ladan Bosso abscondment from duty …writes Secetary-General of NFF

By Amos Okioma
Management of the Bayelsa United Football Club has confirmed the abscondment of Coach Ladan Isah Bosso from duty as the Technical Adviser to the team, describing it as shown of arrogance and disrespect to Bayelsa and it’s people.
57 years old Ladan Bosso, who was contracted last year as Technical Adviser to the Bayelsa State darlin team and moved the team through a survival battle to the 10th position during the 2024/2025 NFFL season.
It was gathered that Ladan Bosso, who is the President of the Nigeria Coaches Association and former Head Coach of Nigeria’s U-20 national team, was lured by the newly promoted Barau FC team of Kano with a promise to double his pay package.
Barau FC has however announced and unveiled Ladan Bosso as the team’s Technical Adviser for the new football season. The announcement shocked management and supporters of the Bayelsa United who thought Ladan Bosso was on holiday.
Though the details of the contract agreement reached with the Bayelsa United FC remained unknown, it was confirmed that Ladan Bosso has abandoned all ongoing Pre-Season preparation of the club and joined Barau FC.
Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, who is also abreast of the development also mentioned it during the last State Executive Council meeting while hosting the victorious players of the Bayelsa Queens.
Gov. Diri, it was gathered, advised the management of the team to write the NFF about Ladan Bosso action before embarking on the recruitment of a new Coach for the team.
Reacting to the development, in a petition filed before the Secetary General of the Nigeria Football Federation, the management of the Bayelsa United through it’s Chairman, Nwakwe Tarilaye, described Ladan Bosso action as ” brazen show of disrespect and arrogance to the state and Government of Bayelsa State”.
According to the letter, titled “Notification of Abscondment from Duty by Ladan Bosso”, “Ladan Bosso has absconded from duty without any form of communication.it is now public knowledge that Ladan Boss has contracted a new deal with newly promoted Barau FC of Kano when he has a subsisting contract with us.”
“His conduct being President of the Coaches Association only speaks to a brazen manifestation of arrogance and disrespect to the government and people of Bayelsa State.”
” The action of Bosso is not only embarrassing but also a distortion of our preparation for the 2025/2026 NFFL season.Mr.Bosso has violated the terms of his contract with the club.”
” Consequently, it is our considered stand that Mr Ladan Isah Bosso be made to pay damages of N30 million for breach of contract and serve as a deterrent to others coaches.”

AKASSA’s Enduring Contribution to National Sports Development

By Dave Ikiedei Asei
In the aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War, the AKASSA clan played a transformative role in rebuilding the country’s social fabric through sports. The conflict had scattered youths across various communities, but the resurgence of sports provided a vital platform for reconciliation, unity, and social reintegration. Sports became more than recreation—it evolved into a vehicle for healing, bonding, and national cohesion.
Recognizing this unifying potential, the federal government introduced key initiatives aimed at rehabilitation and social harmony. These included the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NIFEST), the National Sports Festival, National School Sports Competitions, the Principal’s Cup, Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) tournaments, and the Shell Cup. These platforms laid the groundwork for both grassroots and elite sports development in Nigeria.
The post-war period also marked a strategic investment in regional sporting infrastructure. The construction of stadiums and sports facilities across geopolitical zones boosted competitive sports and gave birth to formidable regional teams such as Spartans of Owerri, Enugu Rangers, Racket Rovers, Redevils of Rivers State, and Stationery Stores of Lagos. These clubs became breeding grounds for talent and incubators of national pride.
The 1972 FESTAC Games stood as a cultural and athletic milestone. Communities from across the nation, including AKASSA, participated robustly. The AKASSA clan distinguished itself by contributing athletes and coaches who represented their region with excellence, inspiring further engagement with sports across the Niger Delta.
In line with the national revival, AKASSA communities responded by establishing local football clubs that would significantly impact regional sports. Notable among them were Redevils FC, Atlantic Ocean FC, and Atlantic Waves FC—founded by Hezekiah Ikio of the Apparabie community. From the 1970s through the late 1990s, these clubs flourished in Brass, Nembe, and Igbomotoru in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, nurturing a new generation of athletic talent.
Prominent athletes who emerged from this era included Hon. Ebieri Jones, Tom Febo (a teammate of national legend Friday Okoh of the Green Eagles), Living Appreye (a.k.a. Dombraye and the first major discovery of late Coach Sinclair), and Felix Bokouru, discovered through school competitions. Additional notable figures such as George Ikelemo—who played under the esteemed Coach Taiwo Ogunjobi at Julius Berger Ajaokuta—also rose to prominence. The list continues with Brantein Dordor, Itari Dordor, Perry Kombo Dadigi, and the late Bob Wendi Digitemie.
The AKASSA clan’s impact on Nigerian sports extends far beyond the football field. The community produced swimming champions like Gentle Ofoin, a medalist at both the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, and Maria Jonah, a former national swimming titleholder. Their achievements placed AKASSA on the global sports map.
Ogrija Ogrija, a war veteran and revered swimming coach stationed at the Isaka Sports Institute, was instrumental in nurturing swimming talent in Bayelsa State. His influence in aquatic sports development remains unmatched.
In the discipline of weightlifting, John Bull Bussa from Sángana made a significant mark. His accomplishments advanced the sport in Bayelsa and laid a foundation for future athletes. Similarly, Friday Okoh transitioned from a brilliant playing career with the Green Eagles to coaching and eventually served as a director in the defunct Rivers State Sports Council.
There has been neglect of pioneers and ,hence there is urgent need for recognition
Despite their substantial contributions, many of these AKASSA sports icons passed on without the honors they rightfully deserved. Neither the Bayelsa State Sports Council nor its predecessor in Rivers State, nor even the National Sports Commission, has adequately recognized these trailblazers. This neglect has ignited public outcry and a growing movement to reevaluate how Nigeria commemorates its sports pioneers and accord the recognition due them.
Hon. Uroh Kiani, a member of the planning committee celebrating the 50 years of grassroots sports development spearheaded by Chief (Amb.) Ogunu Miebi Samson, has called for a cultural shift. He denounced the prevailing trend of posthumous recognition, advocating instead for the celebration of sports heroes during their lifetimes.
Celebrating CHF (Amb.) Ogunu Miebi Samson’s Lifelong Impact
One of the most notable figures in Bayelsa’s grassroots sports development is chief (Amb.) Ogunu Miebi Samson from the Apparabie community in Brass LGA. For over five decades, he has committed his life to identifying and nurturing sports talent at the grassroots level. His mentorship has shaped the lives of countless youths and contributed significantly to Nigeria’s sporting advancement.
In recognition of his dedication, the celebration planning committee is rallying support from government institutions, corporate bodies, and well-meaning individuals to honor CHF Ogunu. This celebration aims not only to acknowledge his lifetime achievements but also to establish a precedent for how Nigeria values and uplifts those who serve the nation through sports.
A Clarion Call to the Nation
The story of AKASSA’s indelible impact on Nigerian sports is a compelling testament to the transformative power of grassroots engagement. From producing elite athletes and legendary coaches to serving as a model of post-conflict reintegration, AKASSA has consistently demonstrated that talent knows no geographic bounds.
It is time for both state and federal authorities to institutionalize the celebration of living sports legends. The planned recognition of CHF Ogunu Miebi Samson should mark the beginning of a broader movement—one that appreciates contributions in real time and inspires the next generation of athletes to dream, compete, and lead.
AKASSA’s Historical Significance
Historically, AKASSA has long held strategic national relevance. Between 1871 and 1890, it served as a prominent British post. The community hosted customs operations and functioned as a key node for the Royal Navy, the Marine Ports Authority (now NPA), and Inland Waterways before operations were relocated to Lagos. Its historical legacy, combined with its contributions to Nigeria’s sporting evolution, cements AKASSA’s status as a community of enduring national significance.
