The Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr Daniel Igali, has called on the National Sports Commission and the Main Organising Committee of the National Sports Festival in Ogun State to include traditional wrestling known as “Kuwa” and Canoeing as part of the events for the festival.

Igali made the call when he received Bayelsa athletes who represented Nigeria at the recently-concluded 13th ECOWAS African Wrestling Tournament at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja which was part of activities lined up to celebrate ECOWAS’ 50th anniversary.

He  commended the Bayelsa athletes for yet again, making the country proud after Ebi Biogos 76K and Ebipadei Mughabofa 66K won gold each for Team Nigeria while combining with their teammates to win two silver medals in team events.

The commissioner who heaped praises on Nigeria’s abundant talents in every sport called on the National Sports Commission being led by proven sports administrators, Shehu Dikko

and Bukola Olopade to consider including traditional wrestling and canoeing in the events to be competed for, at the Sports Festival coming up in Ogun State.

According to Igali, traditional wrestling is one of the local sports in the country and Africa that connects our cultural heritage. Thus, it deserves to be part of the events for the Nigerian version of the Olympic Games.

Also, the world and Olympic wrestling champion expressed shock at canoeing being excluded from the festival despite successively qualifying for the last two editions of the Olympics.

He described canoeing as one of the potential sports that can win Nigeria medals at the Olympics if properly encouraged and invested in.

While formally receiving the athletes Igali said “On behalf of the Bayelsa State Government, I receive you all with pride, celebrating what you have done. This shows clearly the focus of sports development in Bayelsa.”

“Arising from that, it is a bit of an irony that Nigeria has hosted the whole of West Africa in traditional wrestling, and we don’t have it at the next sports festival in Ogun State. My appeal to the National Sports Commission is that this is one cultural event that is relatable to virtually every culture and tribe in Nigeria,” Igali said.

“Let me also use this opportunity to mention another sport canoeing, this is one sport that Nigeria has a good opportunity to win a medal at the next Olympics if we plan very early. Over the pa8st Olympics, it has qualified athletes who have done very well and need to be encouraged by harnessing its potentials” Igali maintained.

He concluded by appreciating the Bayelsa State Government led by Senator Douye Diri for massively encouraging sports development through approval of funds to execute its programmes.

Meanwhile, the Director of Sports Bayelsa State Sports Council, Sir Braveman Wodi, who is the overseer and direct principal of the wrestlers, applauded them for representing the state and being good ambassadors of the Ijaw Nation.

Braveman noted that their triumph speaks volumes of the developmental policies of the Prosperity administration of Governor Douye Diri and his deputy Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

“It is a pleasure to be here today as we close the Chief of Defence Staff Under-15 Boys Football Championship, an initiative that reflects our collective commitment to developing the next generation of disciplined, talented and focused Nigerian youths.

At a time our nation faces various social and security challenges, sports competitions like this one, teach discipline, resilience, fair play and respect, attributes that are essential for personal growth and national development.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria has long recognized the importance of physical fitness, mental alertness and emotional stability in shaping productive and responsible citizens. This Championship provides a platform for our young boys to

“Your future is important to us, and we will continue to support programmes that keep you engaged, focused and inspired to become great leaders of tomorrow. I wish to sincerely appreciate the Chief of Defence Staff, General 0.0. Oluyede, Armed Forces Medal for this initiative and unwavering support and commitment to youth development and grassroots sports. His vision continues to open doors of opportunity for young people to grow, leam, and excel.

“It is in the light of this, that I have committed myself to empowering the youths to meaningfully contribute to the development of our dear country Nigeria in line with my Military Strategic Philosophy for the Armed Forces of Nigeria which is, “To consolidate the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria through enhanced jointness for a reinforced operational posture, supported improved welfare efforts and sound administration aimed at ensuring the Armed Forces maintain its core military fundamentals of guaranteeing Nigeria’s sovereignty and prosperity under a whole of government approach”.

Over the last seven days, we have witnessed not only the triumphs of skill, strength and stamina, but the display of discipline, respect, resilience and unity which are the same values that define us as soldiers, as Nigerians and as one community. Our youths have shown us that sports are not just about competition, but about character. Every jump, every pass, every cheer from the crowd reminds us that the spirit of teamwork and camaraderie runs deep within our States, in that spirit lies the strength of our Armed Forces and our nation,” he stated.

The top millitary brass urged the youths, to carry forward the lessons of the Championship, that unity is strength, discipline is the foundation of excellence, and that with determination, there is no limit to what youths can achieve.

Earlier, in his speech, the
General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Emmanuel Emekah had berated team Cross River state for fielding an overaged players in tournament.

“I was happy when I heard that you were disqualified for fielding a wrong player, this is a military event and you must show the highest level of discipline, I didn’t want to mention it here, but since you have brought it out, let me comment on it.

“It is not the fault of the players, the fault is that of the team officials that brought you to do that nonsense. We should not take that as a nation and we will not take it in the military.

“If it is under 10, play under 10, sports is not a do or die affair, the idea of this game is for us to come together to exchange ideas, to enjoy the game, there is no winner, no vanquished.

“Officials of Cross River state would take full responsibility for this nonsense that has been done, I am going to call the commissioner of sports in Cross River state immediately after this and I’m going to talk to him, the officials of that team have to be penalized.

Thanking the CDS for available 6 Division the opportunity to host the tournament, Emekah urged the participants to shun all social vices common to youths of their age.

“Let me start by thanking the Chief of Defence Staff, for giving 6 Division the opportunity to host this tournament. I thank the Director of Sports that has been here all through, would have been here from beginning, but unfortunately I was away to Lagos for an assignment, I returned last night and I’m grateful to be here to see all you participants.

Highlights of the event were the football game. The Imo state millitary football team, Edo and Coss River states won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively, and received cash award of #5.0m, #3.m and #2.m , accordingly. ###.
