Don’t celebrate alleged coup attempt, security expert, Jackson Ojo tells Nigerians

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

By Abdul-Ganiyy Akanbi

A certified international security expert, Dr Jackson Lekan Ojo has called on Nigerians not to celebrate the alleged coup plot against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Though the Nigerian military authorities have debunked the alleged coup attempt, the story is still making waves across the country following the arrest of some military officers and the raid on the private residence of former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva.

In a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja, Ojo condemned the alleged coup plot and declared that there is nothing to applaud or celebrate when a democratically elected government is violently overthrown.

He also called on media houses not to give their platforms to those who are celebrating the alleged coup attempt.

“Concerning the coup plot we are talking about, a lot of Nigerians do not know the danger in violently taking over power.

“We have rights as citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to change the government through our voters card.

“Nothing is acceptable, there is no excuse, there is no condition that would warrant violent change in government.

“I think it is condemnable, it is not globally acceptable and I want to call on Nigerians that nobody should celebrate either it is true or false.

“It is not a situation where Nigerians should be jubilant. Over what?

“The government that Nigerians voted in place and some people wanted to change the government violently and we are celebrating it?

“I want to advise the media houses, both print and electronic, nobody should accept any voice that is sort of celebrating the purported coup attempt.

“There is nothing to be happy about, there is nothing to jubilate about. It is our government, the government of the people for the people and by the people.

“Let Nigerians forget about the performance, whatever the performance it is the government we put in place and there is no one that shall violently want to change the government that we should be happy about.

“It is condemnable and it is not something we should celebrate at all. No media house should accept any voice that is celebrating the purported coup attempt,” Ojo stressed.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has extended warm greetings and felicitations to all Muslim faithful in Rivers State and across Nigeria as they celebrate Eid-el Kabir, the Festival of Sacrifice.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi,Fubara described the feast as a season that calls on everyone, irrespective of faith, to have a deep reflection on the values of sacrifice, compassion, generosity, and unity.

Governor Fubara also expressed gratitude to the Muslim community for its contributions to the peace, economic growth, and social harmony of Rivers State.

According to him, the celebration of Eid Kabir should be a moment for all Muslims and non-Muslims alike, to reaffirm their commitment to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and collective progress.

He enjoined them to ensure that diversity in faith does not become a source of division, but of strength to enhance peaceful coexistence.

“As you gather with family, friends, and neighbours to share meals and offer prayers, I urge you to extend hands of kindness to the less privileged in our midst.

Let the spirit of sacrifice that defines this festival inspire us to give more, forgive more, and love more.

“On this sacred occasion, I pray that Almighty Allah accepts your sacrifices, forgives your shortcomings, and grants you and your families peace, good health, and abundant blessings. May the lessons of Eid-el Kabir guide us all as we work to make Rivers State and Nigeria a place of justice, prosperity, and unity for every citizen,” he said.
